Celebrity Style: Heidi Klum and the Gucci Campaign to Benefit UNICEF "Snowman in Africa" Joy Bag

I was all set to rag on this bag for all the obvious reasons until I read it's part of an accessories line from Gucci's 2009 campaign to benefit UNICEF. How can I poo poo on a bag whose sale will help support education, healthcare, protection and clean water programs for orphans and children affected by HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa? Over the past five years, Gucci has managed to commit nearly $7 million to UNICEF. That's an amazing number, and one I'm thrilled to hear will only increase this year with the sale of an exclusive accessories collection, among other items. The theme for this year is "Snowman in Africa", a book sequel to author and illustrator Michael Roberts' best-selling children's book Snowman in Paradise. The book as well as the accessories line mentioned earlier will go on sale in Gucci stores and on-line at Gucci.com starting November 16 until December 31, 2009 with 100% and 25% respectively of their retail price donated to UNICEF.

The "Snowman in Africa" Joy Bag (seen here on model Heidi Klum) features one of Roberts' illustrations (and a sort of creepy one too) as an appliqué on the front exterior of the bag. A snake wrapped around a snowman standing amidst a field of tall grass is too much of a statement for me to stomach on a bag. I won't get into too much detail about how idiotic I think using these design tricks on designer bags is. Instead I'll urge those of you with some disposable cash to buy the book or some smaller item like a coin purse or wallet to help Gucci's campaign. I can't ask anyone to buy this bag in good conscience, even if it is to benefit children in need. I'd rather just donate the money directly to UNICEF and forego buying this silly bag.
